The basics

An inviting, cosy home doesn't necessarily have to cost a lot of money. With small, simple changes you can quickly create a lovely atmosphere. Once the basics of the interior are in place, the details finish it off. Don't just think of home accessories here; lighting and everyday items around the house can also play a role. And there's no need at all to buy everything new. Combining a good base with personal belongings, a special family heirloom, a souvenir or unusual or affordable finds actually gives a home much more atmosphere and character. So a nice mix is important: dare to make your own combinations and experiment.

Something else that saves money is not blindly following interior trends, which risks making you buy too much. What's more, trends change quickly and not every home accessory automatically suits every style or home. Look very carefully at your interior, define your own style and stick to it very consistently. If an item doesn't fit the atmosphere and colours of your mood board, the temptation to buy it will be much smaller. This prevents lots of bad buys, saves money and protects your interior style at the same time. It also gives a much calmer feel, and a less cluttered room draws more attention to the furniture and accessories that are there. Do you like to vary your accessories now and then? Then keep a shelf free in a cupboard for a few extra items, so you can easily swap things around.

Mood board

With a digital mood board (on Pinterest, for example) or a photo on your phone of a collection of favourite images from (interior) magazines, you always have your mood board to hand, wherever you are. It's the perfect yardstick for not straying from your personal taste, so you can make conscious choices.

When you start styling your home, atmosphere and unity are the most important principles. You don't need to have lots of accessories or very expensive ones; it's much more important that everything is well coordinated. When buying, pay attention to the material, the shape and the colour. Once the basic interior of your home is settled, you can get started on the details.

Accents

Do you have a calm base at home? Then choose two, or at most three, accent colours in one room. Then let these accent colours come back several times to create more unity. Striking materials such as brass, a special type of wood and fabrics can also play a role here. Take brass, for example: it's pronounced in both colour and material. Or do you have a colourful or more pronounced base? Then focus mainly on accessories in neutral tones and materials, or add transparent elements. Think of different types of wood, bamboo and glass.

Greenery

In both cases, don't forget to add natural greenery. Plants make a beautiful styling element, create instant atmosphere and give you healthier air too. And not unimportantly, there's a suitable plant for every budget and every interior style. When buying, pay close attention to the care it needs and the amount of daylight the room in question gets. That way you'll enjoy your greenery for as long as possible.

Less is more

For all accessories, the rule is: less is more. Don't try to fill every free spot with home items or things. It's more powerful to group a number of accessories together. Ideal places for this are the windowsill, a sideboard, a side table, an open cupboard or a wall shelf. Clustering styling elements has a reinforcing effect and the whole looks much calmer. Each season you can swap and play with different colours, materials and textures.
