5 reasons why living in Lombok is great

Lombok Muntkade

Lombok and Nieuw-Engeland: two Utrecht gems that are putting themselves more and more firmly on the map. As your creative estate agency, we're enthusiastic about what these neighbourhoods have to offer. We'll take you on a voyage of discovery through Lombok and present five irresistible reasons why living here is simply wonderful.

1. Lively water: Muntkade and the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal

Lombok is embraced by lively water, such as the well-known Muntkade. A place where you not only enjoy beautiful water, but where those who like a swim can cool off. Along the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal a green strip is being developed, with wide views, a unique outdoor-living feel in the heart of the city and the bustle of passing cargo ships. Here you'll already find, for example, Soia, a really fun city beach where they also organise lovely small-scale festivals and parties.

2. The best ingredients

Step into the Damstraat and Kanaalstraat for a culinary voyage of discovery. Speciality shops, greengrocers and bakeries tantalise your senses with the freshest and most unusual ingredients. From vegan cheeses to exotic products; you'll find it all here. Turkish and Moroccan greengrocers, Asian delicatessens and soon Familie van Rijk at the Groeneweg too: this neighbourhood spoils your taste buds. Personally, I also really love the genuine old off-licence. The owners know you and they sell real Utrecht products. Persepolis is the biggest favourite of most of our clients. They sell the most delicious ingredients there.

3. Hip hotspots for work and relaxation

Lombok isn't only buzzing during the day, but in the evening too. Hotel The Anthony offers a pleasant stay with a large inner garden and a lovely restaurant. It's a former convent, everything there is pink and it's a really great place to spend some time. Koffie en Ik is the perfect place for a productive working day with delicious coffee and cakes. For the tastiest pizzas, Pizza Beppe and BastaCosi are absolute must-tries. And would you like to taste something special? Jasmijn & Ik treats you to top-class Asian cuisine. This restaurant will really surprise you. Lombok guarantees both work and relaxation at the highest level. Something I personally love is Kanaalzicht. This is a real Utrecht café that opened in 1905. There's live music almost every Sunday. You can sit out on the terrace in the sunshine here, looking out over the water. Molen de Ster is also a very special spot. Here you sit by the water. You can have lunch and buy products here. But there are events too.

4. Centrally located with excellent connections

Living in Lombok means enjoying a central location. Utrecht Centraal station, with excellent train and bus connections, is practically around the corner. By car you're quickly on the motorway, while still living on the edge of Utrecht's bustling centre. Lombok plays a key role in the expansion of the city centre, making it Utrecht's new central place to be.

5. Constant development for a future-proof neighbourhood

We wrote earlier that the city's centre of gravity would shift to the west side of the city. Lombok isn't standing still; it's growing and flourishing. The west side of Utrecht is becoming a hip and sustainable addition to the city centre. With growing interest from Amsterdam and the central location of Utrecht West, Lombok is only becoming more popular. New-build projects such as the Cartesiusdriehoek give the neighbourhood an extra boost. Investing in Lombok is investing in a flourishing future.

In the bustling heart of Lombok, where the Westplein is still dominated by cars, asphalt and bikes, a radical transformation is in the pipeline. Within a few years this area will be redesigned into what we're provisionally calling the Lombokplein, a symbol of greenery, water and well-being.

What can you expect?

  • Two striking residential buildings, one on the Kop van Lombok and one on the Leidseweg, will enrich the cityscape with around 350 to 400 homes, including social rent, mid-segment rental and owner-occupied homes, and homes in the upper segment.
  • The area will become greener with the planting of around 300 new trees and the development of a navigable Leidse Rijn with three bridges.
  • New buildings will go up by the NH Hotel, including an extension of the hotel, studios and small-scale office units for local entrepreneurs.
  • A park on the water of the Leidse Rijn with a nature-friendly bank, and two gardens between the new buildings on the Leidseweg, will create a harmonious living environment.
  • A cycle route along the Leidse Rijn to the city centre and Utrecht Centraal will improve mobility.
  • A city street will replace the traffic junction, creating a normal but lively street with two lanes and a 30 km/h speed limit.

The Beurskwartier will be the lively new place to live

Discover the bustling Beurskwartier, a modern addition to Utrecht's historic heart, located between the Croeselaan, the Van Zijstweg and the Graadt van Roggenweg. From 2023 this dynamic district will become the place to live, work and relax, and it promises to become a contemporary central area for all the people of Utrecht.

What can you expect?

  • Homes: An ambitious plan for at least 2,500 new homes, ranging in height from 12 and 25 to 45 metres. High-rise buildings with peaks of up to 70 or 90 metres will enrich the cityscape.
  • Diversity: Apartments and workspaces in various sizes and price ranges, including social, mid-priced and expensive rental homes, owner-occupied homes, and workplaces for some 5,000 people.
  • Green oases: Two parks and various facilities for culture, recreation and going out will transform the Beurskwartier into an area where greenery and entertainment go hand in hand.
