Frümel: a living room on the Amsterdamsestraatweg

Frümel

Frümel makes Utrecht feel a little more like home. The people at Frümel often hear that customers feel at ease in the shop. People like to come back. As the owners tell it: “We once had an older lady in the shop who became a bit emotional; she said she still missed a certain cosiness at home and that she did feel it here. We had a chat together, and a few months later she came back again. She thanked us for the conversation, said she had really enjoyed it, and said that this time too the shop felt like a ‘cosy living room’. A compliment really can't get any better than that”

Vintage

Frümel started in 2015. The owners are always on the lookout for beautiful furniture from the 1960s: in second-hand shops, attics on old farms, house clearances, care homes, from family, from dealers or at markets. They do up the furniture, reupholster it and make sure it's ‘ready for another round’. They are very selective about the products they choose, so they keep the atmosphere in the shop ‘fresh and up to date’. They want to avoid at all costs that it gets a ‘charity-shop vibe’. The shop has to be hip and classy. Products you can easily place in a contemporary interior.

The future

Plans for the future? Growing! A big warehouse where they can store unlimited furniture. Within 5 years, the area around the Amsterdamsestraatweg will be booming business. The neighbourhood is changing. Young entrepreneurs are coming, young families with children, couples, and students are also increasingly moving to this area. The people at Frümel really do hope that the ‘raw, typically Utrecht and multicultural’ character remains, otherwise it will become a neighbourhood that ‘gets yuppified’ and loses its charm.

Lovely spots in Utrecht

Utrecht has lots of lovely spots. Every neighbourhood in Utrecht has its own vibe. This neighbourhood has a raw edge, Rivierenwijk is up and coming with lots of new little bars, and Overvecht is greener than the rest of Utrecht. Wittevrouwen is perfect for getting lost in and has beautiful old buildings, and Tolsteeg is wonderful for a boat trip and discovering the row of monumental buildings. The Oudegracht: every time you walk there, you see something new that you hadn't noticed before.

Limburg hospitality at Frümel

Frümel's best-kept secret is the Limburg hospitality and friendliness we brought with us from our birthplace. Everyone is always welcome in the shop. Even when they're closed, the doors still open now and then. If there's something wrong with the furniture you bought, the people at Frümel will look for a solution together with you. Is it someone on the team's birthday? Then you've struck lucky: Limburgse Vlaai (Limburg fruit tart).

Want to come and discover the great shops on the Amsterdamsestraatweg too? You'll find Gusto Casa there from 25 January 2019!
