Utrecht West is where it's going to happen!

Utrecht housing market

The west side of Utrecht is becoming more and more popular. In a while, Utrecht West will even become more popular than the east side. Utrecht West is in full development. Many people know that Utrecht Centraal station has been a building site for a long time. Almost everything around the station is now really finished. But then they'll start on the other side. The historic city centre is on the east side of Utrecht Centraal. But a lot is set to happen on the west side of the station.

Utrecht West

The Municipality of Utrecht describes the plans in Utrecht West as a ‘Healthy Urban Boost’. Utrecht is centrally located and has the largest public transport hub in the Netherlands. The historic city centre is a magnet, but the pressure of use there is high. So the city centre needs to expand to keep meeting demand. The centre will expand in two places: the Lombokplein and the Beurskwartier. Around 3,500 homes will be built, interspersed with workspaces, food and drink, culture and neighbourhood shops, 2 parks for the Beurskwartier and a waterside square for the Lombokplein. The Leidse Rijn canal is also being made navigable and extended as far as the Catharijnesingel. How great does that sound? The photo below shows the expansions.

The Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal park zone

The municipality wants to make the park zone along the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal bigger and greener. This should be a lovely place to enjoy the sunshine with a book, exercise, cycle, walk and meet your neighbours. At the moment it's not yet possible to cycle or walk all the way from one end to the other. There are few facilities, but the canal has a lot going for it:

  • unique views thanks to the large expanse of water
  • an outdoor feeling in the middle of the city
  • the hundreds of cargo ships that sail along the canal every day bring it to life.

This is a big project, so it will be carried out in phases. Work on the park zone is already under way at:

What does this mean for the west side of Utrecht?

The west side is becoming a trendy & sustainable addition to the city centre. With the ever-growing group coming from Amsterdam and Utrecht West's central location relative to Amsterdam, Lombok & Nieuw Engeland are only going to get more popular. All these developments will give the west side an enormous boost. Especially once the Merwedekanaalzone has been redeveloped as well. Lombok is expected to become increasingly popular in the coming years. This has a favourable effect on the value of the houses.
