Amsterdamsestraatweg: shabby chic, a neighbourhood with a raw edge. It doesn't sound charming, but that's exactly what makes this neighbourhood so nice. No cookie-cutter sameness. But a neighbourhood with character, a neighbourhood where you'd really love to live.

Amsterdamsestraatweg
It's been a long time since people liked living on the Amsterdamsestraatweg and called the Straatweg a nice place. But that has changed. The Amsterdamsestraatweg is hip again. Jan is de Man has even got the Straatweg into the Lonely Planet. A cosmopolitan street: that's what the Straatweg is meant to become. A street full of specialist shops. And slowly we are seeing change. Hip little businesses are arriving and the former workers' houses are being renovated well.

Specialist shops & places to eat and drink
On the Amsterdamsestraatweg you won't find a chic deli yet. Nor a chic restaurant with stiff table linen. But you will find the Ping Pong Club around the Straatweg. We also see cosmopolitan supermarkets. Rigakis, a Greek delicatessen, Amazing Oriental for the tastiest Asian ingredients, Tanger for all your Moroccan ingredients, Slavjanski Dvar the Russian supermarket. The tastiest roti and Surinamese sandwiches at Prem. But also real Utrecht ingredients at Familie van Rijk. During a large number of viewings, people also recommended ’t Dikkertje to me: a Greek restaurant. Satriales for delicious pizzas, Bagels & Beans, Brandstof and the gluten-free restaurant The Food Club, GYS for vegan and vegetarian food, Loaded for festival food, Rose & Vanilla for the tastiest gluten-free cakes. Polier van Leeuwen can also be found on the Amsterdamsestraatweg, and on Wednesdays there's a market on the Plantage. All flavours, all ingredients: you can find them all on the Amsterdamsestraatweg.

Lovely shops
Something that always makes me happy is good old Dutch Hema. The Hema can be found on the Amsterdamsestraatweg too. You'll also find Kruidvat, Trekpleister, Eco Plaza, Albert Heijn, Wibra, Aldi, Plus & the dirt-cheap Action. But if you're looking for a present, the Amsterdamsestraatweg won't let you down either. Een Winkel vol Winkeltjes, Frumel, &Meer and Familie van Rijk mean you really don't need to go into town for presents any more. Looking for new clothes for the kids? Deugniet has second-hand branded clothing, at Francis you'll find something both for the little ones and for yourself, and at Winkel vol Winkeltjes and &Meer there's plenty for the little ones too.

Still, as you go down the Straatweg you wonder: will it really turn out all right?
When you cycle along the Straatweg and see a hair salon, massage parlour, kebab shop, phone shop, nail studio or tailor every 20 metres, you wonder: ‘Will it really turn out all right’? I've often wondered that myself. But more and more often, enforcement officers are walking around. More and more often the street sweepers come by. On some doors you can read that the business has been temporarily closed by order of the Mayor. But among the profusion of hairdressers you now also see a Kinky kappers salon. A daring chain that was one of the first to dare to invest in this location. Construction of Wisselspoor has now really begun.

Who is moving into the neighbourhood?
Recently, homes here have been changing hands at lightning speed. Most of the people now coming to live around the Amsterdamsestraatweg are young and successful. Many couples who used to move to Wittevrouwen, Oudwijk or the Vogelenbuurt are now coming to the Daalsebuurt. Nice single-family homes a short distance from public transport, good connections to Amsterdam and yet right in the city. Would you like to live in this neighbourhood too? A really nice home is coming up.
